Artist Statement

Ceramics is a form of art that to me is not comparable to any other mediums. The actual act itself of forming your pieces with your bare hands is exactly what I love so much about it. There is nothing quite as satisfying as finishing a piece knowing it was you who formed it and brought your ideas to life.

I normally like to focus on organic shapes that have motion and life to them. There is something so soothing about non-bright colors as well that I usually avoid bright, eye-drawing glazes. With that, I either form very realistic forms or very abstract. In one of my pieces, I wanted to form the human hand and attempt to make it as realistic as possible. In addition, I made the bottom half of the human body, in a social critique assignment, where I focused on the idea that everyone has the right to there own body without the judgement of others. The human body is one of the most majestic things on earth so if I’m going to focus solely on legs, arm, hands, etc, I want them to resemble the real thing itself.

My sketchbook is more or less a brainstorm for the project I want to make. I usually know exactly what I want to do in my head so my sketchbook is simply a reminder I make for myself. I think it’s important to change your ideas whenever you’d like and the initial drawing in your sketchbook should never be concrete. I hope to further my experimenting with ceramics and make my pieces deep thus up for interpretation of it’s viewer
